Patience is Needed – The Struggle with Delayed Parts at Collision Shops

THE AUTO BODY SHOP’S STRUGGLE WITH PARTS

There has been a lot of frustration with delayed delivery of auto parts. This can be a struggle for collision shops to guarantee a date for repairs to be completed when scheduling during an estimate. With no fault to their own, it’s a frustrating ordeal for both the shop and the customer. In these cases, no one is right or wrong. Is it fair that a shop gets a bad review because a part is delayed? This is something that is unforeseen and out of the shop’s control and is a tough place to be in these days as an auto body shop owner. We all wat to get back in our cars as soon as possible like it used to be. Times have changed, auto body shops are working hard to find solutions to their scheduling while making promises however, with no guarantee due to delayed parts.

WHAT IS CAUSING DELAYED AUTO PARTS

With winter coming in 2022, it sometimes takes weeks or months to get parts even for popular models from volume leaders such as Ford, Honda, or Toyota…when it would typically take a day (or no more than a week) for auto body repairs.

During the earlier part of the pandemic, there were manufacturing delays stemming from shuttered factories, both domestically and internationally. Ships are waiting in line in ports to be unloaded with auto parts coming from overseas. Trucks are experiencing labor shortages, or the cost of container shipment has quintupled. Gas prices, without even being said, is a factor as we all know. Production and material costs have inflated as well. Chip production has impacted new auto production, but there are those other shortages of auto parts, headlights, hoods, and bumpers have slowed collision repair shops. This includes OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and aftermarket auto parts.

WHAT CAN AUTO BODY SHOPS DO

Shops are facing similar challenges nationwide, so going outside your local auto body shop area is not an option either. If a shop finds the opportunity to let a car go out safely with partial repairs, the car could be released to complete the balance of the job later until the parts come in. Yes, this means two visits but alleviates the rental car issue if a car is drivable until the part comes in. There is no reason for holding on to a car when it could be driven. Insurance companies are aware of this issue and are working with auto body shops, estimators, and insurance claims assistance teams to help in the process.

There is no immediate solution to the parts shortage. Customers must be patient; body shops must be creative, and insurers must be flexible. If you get in a crash now, the wait for parts to repair could take months drivable or not. Be extra careful driving on the roadways. Give yourself more time to get to your destination. If the cost of claims is driven higher due to an increase in the cost of parts, your insurance premiums could suffer. Body shops are working with their customers to get the parts in as quickly as possible and initiating the up-front leg work prior to making promises so that the relationship with the shop and their customers is completely transparent. Don’t blame the shops. This is a nationwide dilemma. Find a solution together that works for both parties.
