Is That Car Scratch a DIY Task or do I Need an Auto Body Shop to Fix It?

Scratches happen and our car takes a good beating by the weather and other things every year. We find ourselves on the road almost daily with errands, kid activities, work, vacations, events, etc.  Occasionally, you’ll have to park in a public lot where you have no control over the neighboring vehicles. But even when you are not in your car, and it’s just parked a home…as a result, you are bound to get some dings and surface damage from any random item – such as a hailstorm, a falling acorn, a flying pebble, or an opening car door. Worse still, you might experience intentional keying or an actual collision that results in your car’s perfect paint job having some type of imperfection. So, depending on how deep the scratch is, how wide, and how long, you may be able to fix this blemish yourself or you may have to turn to an auto body shop who will have to restore your showroom finish paint job.

How to determine how deep the scratch is

A car’s factory level paint has three layers adhered to the base sheet metal

  • Primer
  • Base coat
  • Clear coat

If the scratch is only on the clear coat, then it is not very deep. If it is also not too deep or long, then a DYI remediation is plausible. Many products are available to buff, polish, and wax small scratches that will fix thin scratched layers on the clear coat level.

If a scratch goes deeper than the clear coat how deep has the base coat been penetrated? The most superficial scratch of the base coat may be repairable by a DIY. But at this point, a professional solution is more probably required. A touch-up pen might look okay from a distance, but up close it may not be so easy to hide.

A primer deep scratch is beyond the tools, patience, and expertise of most DIYers. This deep scratch will need repeated cycles of body filler, wet sanding, and painting to blend the damaged surface with the surrounding area of the scratch itself.

Any deep bare metal scratch will not only require a professional but also need to be addressed sooner rather than later so it does not begin to rust. Don’t wait to fix this otherwise the repair may be even more costly.

What tools do I need for a DIY job for scratches

A scratch is some level of damage to one or all three layers protecting your car’s sheet metal – primer, base coat, and clear coat. That damage needs to be filled, colored, and then made level with areas near the damage. The amount of sanding and filling can be done manually or with tools. For a DYI job, you will have to visit your local auto body supply store and invest in:

  • Orbital sander for smooth blending for deeper scratches
  • Filler or rubbing compound
  • Clear Coat
  • Touch up paint (have them match your auto’s paint color)
  • Light grit sandpaper and use in a circular motion
  • Buffing pads
  • Microfiber cloth
  • And any other recommendations by the auto supply dealer
  • YouTube can also be your best friend for DIY jobs, but always consult with a person who knows what they are doing to be sure that the procedure is a valid one

You can purchase scratch repair kits that include some or several of these items that can help you repair small, damaged areas. No amount of time or equipment will make up for the lack of experience in delivering a top-level finish. For deep car scratches, expect to work with an auto body shop or collision repair professional near you.
