Tips to Prevent Hydroplaning During the Rainy Season

The Rainy season is here along with some possible freezing rain in the Bucks County. Keeping safety in mind there are things you can do to prevent hydroplaning. With a lot of rain or even freezing rain, you may want to take note of some things you can do to prevent hydroplaning that could lead to a very serious accident. Keep you, your passengers, and other drivers safe on the roadways this Fall and Winter season. Here are some tips.

What can you do to prevent hydroplaning?

Tires must be kept in good condition: Keeping your tires in contact with the road is the best way to maintain control over your vehicle under any road conditions. Tire should have sufficient tread depth and be inflated to the proper tire pressure. Get regular tire service, tire rotation and a visual inspection. These things can help identify tire problems before they affect your driving safety.

Pay attention to surroundings: Keep an eye on the traffic around you. Do other vehicles have a significant amount of water coming from their tires? If theirs is then there is more than likely a good amount of water on the road and you should slow down.

Avoid standing water: It’s best to avoid puddles and standing water whenever possible. To prevent hydroplaning simply avoiding those large areas of water on the roads.

Drive appropriately for bad road conditions: Speed is a significant factor when it comes to hydroplaning. You’ll be more likely to lose control of your vehicle and find yourself in a dangerous situation if you’re driving too fast for current road conditions. To drive safely, you may actually need to drive under the speed limit.

Don’t use cruise control: When the roads are wet leave cruse control off so you can feel the road conditions and adjust your speed quickly and as needed to keep driving safely. We all want to be lazy drivers and maximize mileage on long trips, but you also lose control because you are less aware.

Your Vehicle’s weight: Heavier vehicles are more likely to displace water on the road easily, allowing them to maintain traction. On the other hand, lighter vehicles are not as able to do that so they become prime candidates for hydroplaning. If you’re driving a lighter vehicle, keep this in mind when driving on wet roads.

Practice safe driving habits: This one is simple. Be aware, be cautious, slow down if needed, be aware of the car in front of you,  don’t follow too close, and follow the tracks of the cars in front of you. Practice safe road rules and you will have less of a risk of hydroplaning.

Most of all if you begin to hydroplane:

DO NOT PANIC! It’s easy to be shaken when you start to lose control over your vehicle but try to remain calm.

DO NOT BRAKE. This can cause your vehicle to skid out of control by braking.

SLOW IT DOWN. Simply let up on the gas and the vehicle will slow on its own, gently transferring weight to the front of the vehicle and allowing you to gain control.

DO NOT OVERCORRECT STEERING. If your vehicle starts pulling to one side…You may want to correct its path. Don’t oversteer, however, or you may lose even more control.
