On the Fence with an Electric Car Purchase? Understand Hidden Costs

Electric cars have their perks with gas prices skyrocketing in the past few months and they are looking better and better every day. However, keep in mind the maintenance and the cost to repair these vehicles, as well as the upfront cost just to produce it. Most people are unaware of the hidden costs and upkeep if something was to go wrong. A warranty is your best friend and be sure to read the fine print. Here are some things to think about and to know when considering this type of vehicle. The positives are obvious such as saving on gas, better for the economy, and tax credits (if applicable on some EVs)…but what about the negatives.

The average price of an EV in the US has risen more than 80%. This is due to manufacturers developing luxury EV models before expanding into cheaper, mass-market vehicles which is a typical approach with new technology. Luxury car owners can afford these high-end models and so they can bear the price of the car and the maintenance. But what about the average daily driver that cannot afford a luxury electric car looking to convert. Maybe think again or wait it out until the demand is less and the infrastructure is more stable.

Up until now, EVs have been priced to reflect the relatively high costs of production, including significant battery and charger costs, as well as more time and labor required to assemble than gas-powered cars. A consumer on a limited budget can buy an affordable EV, but without local, accessible, and wallet-friendly charging infrastructure, they won’t get very far. Literally.  With our growing nationwide peer-to-peer charging network, we make it possible for EV drivers to have more charging options, wherever they go. As more EV drivers come on the road, the demand for charging infrastructure will increase—and as a nation, we are already behind the curve. EV charging stations are already a demand and is a constraint today.

Rising battery metal costs have contributed to a slump in electric vehicle sales, slowing the transition to a low-carbon economy. The average cost of making lithium-ion batteries used for EVs is increasing for the first time in roughly a decade, largely due to the inflated cost of key metals including lithium, cobalt and nickel. Imagine the cost to replace the battery with most at over 4k. You might find your pockets a bit short. This is just one reason to consider transitioning. Here are a few more things to consider:

  • Since the pandemic EV cards are hard to find and prices are inflating from demand.
  • Starting price is $45,000+ – Unfortunately, most EVs cost quite a bit more than most gas cars, which has the potential to reduce or eliminate the net savings from switching.
  • Tax Credits. They sound great to Americans, but Americans might not even realize that this whole system is not as clear as it sounds. Tax credits are great but it’s not off the purchase of the car and you could be waiting months before you even see a check. Here’s more about tax credits from Kelly Blue Book. Learn more about it if you are purchasing an EV with this as one of your main reasons.

In the end the best ways to combat climate change are still the ones that conserve energy – carpooling, limiting trips, taking public transportation, and riding a bike or e-bike for short trips. There are so many ways to conserve and until these EVs are affordable for the masses besides to the luxury seekers that can afford them…it’s a far cry for the average household income.
