Accidents Do Happen When Least Expect it – Here’s What To Do

Car accidents are something we never expect but they will happen at some point in your life on probably more than one occasion. With the rising number of people on the roadways a minor or major collision can leave you stressed, panicked, and shocked with the inability to think straight about what to do next. Not only is it stressful but can also cause a huge financial burden with insurance and medical bills. Here are some steps to take when you find yourself in an unfortunate event such as this whether you’re the cause of the accident or the other person is. Always check with your insurance agent to be sure you know what your insurance covers as far as a rental, towing, deductibles, etc. Be prepared.

First check for injuries

Sometimes we do not realize how bad we’re injured from adrenaline. Be sure to check for any serious injuries before exiting the vehicle. Injuries also can show up a few days later that you were not aware of that could be life-threatening. Document anything you can during the time of the accident. Be sure to ask the other driver/passengers if they have any injuries and document that as well. The authorities will help you through the process when they arrive, but it is always good to have your own notes.

Take Pictures

It is very important that you take pictures of the car and the damage. Take them from all sides from far away and close up. The damages will determine the direction you were coming from, as well as how you were hit. Take pictures of the location and any signage such as a stop sign so you have evidence of the surroundings the accident happened in. You don’t always recall everything when you’re under a lot of stress. Takes any notes with those pictures. Phones have several text and documenting apps. Protect yourself in case in the chaos of things there were some important details left out.

Call the Authorities

Call the police. They will help you obtain the proper paperwork. During this time you can move your car out of the traffic (if possible) as you wait for the police to arrive.  Avoid admitting fault even if you think that you caused the accident. Admittance of fault can be used against you and invalidate any compensation from the accident. Have the situation assessed thoroughly and if you are not sure then check for street cameras or a business that may have some near buy that may have caught the accident on video.

Exchange Contact Information

Get the contact information of the driver who hit you and any passengers and witnesses around. You can ask for their names, phone numbers, addresses, and insurance information. But do not discuss the incident with them and wait for the authorities.

Ask the other driver if they are the registered car owner. If they are not, try to find out the owner’s information.  If possible, get pictures of the driver’s license and insurance card of the other driver. You should also get images of their vehicle as well in case it ends up in a lawsuit.

Do not speak to the other parties’ insurance company until you speak to your own and file the claim.  The scene of an accident is not a calm environment to be making statements to insurance companies.  Wait until you are in a different environment.

Seek Legal Counsel if Needed

Usually, insurance companies will settle the claims and things will be taken care of but some cases may end up in a legal suit where you need representation. Personal injury attorneys are well versed in how insurance companies operate, what the different insurance policies cover, and how to navigate the paperwork involved in settling insurance claims.  You have a right to fair compensation for property loss, work time loss, injury, and medical bills.

If you take these steps, you will save a lot of stress dealing with an accident and feeling frazzled. Be prepared for that accident that you’re  unprepared for.
