The roads can be dangerous this time of year and the New Year’s Eve is coming. Whether you’re visiting family, friends, or just heading to a dinner in Southampton, PA and surrounding areas…here are a few actions that will ensure that your trip is safe keeping these safety precautions top-of-mind. Don’t get in a hurry and keep your eyes on the road and what’s around you. No one wants to end up in a collision and take the fun out of their long-awaited plans.
It’s a good time to make an appointment with your trusted repair shop. A quick check can give you peace of mind that your vehicle is running at its best and will decrease the chances of a breakdown on our trip. Ask your mechanic to check your battery, hoses and filters, belts, fluids, tires, wiper blades, headlights and brake lights. It’s also a good idea to find out if there are any open vehicle recalls and have those addressed while your vehicle is in the shop. Finally, make sure that your spare tire is in good shape and ready to be called into action if the need arises.
Families traveling with kids will likely have to make more stops along the way. It’s best to plan out where you’ll be stopping, especially if you’ll need lodging arrangements. Be sure to pack your GPS system, have a full-charged cell phone for Google Maps, or Map Quest searches or go old school and get out your maps in the car or at least have them handy. Teach your kids how to read them in case of an emergency.
There are a lot of apps now-a-days that come in quite handy while traveling. Download food apps to stop and reenergize, gas station apps to fill up your tank or take restrooms breaks, and GPS apps to help guide you in the right direction with the safest and fastest route. Take the time to look at what your phone app store offers up for the best apps to use for traveling.
Load your car with first aid and emergency car kits that cover basic health issues and vehicle breakdowns. You never know when a band-aid, antibiotic ointment, pain reliever, ice pack or other health item will come in handy. The prepared traveler also has a tire iron, jumper cables or a quick jump battery, backup fluids, kitty litter, a snow shovel and blankets in the car. You may also want to pack several days-worth of water and nutrient-dense snacks in case of emergency.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes nearly 100,000 crashes with 800 fatalities and about 50,000 injuries are caused because of drowsy driving. Don’t become a statistic.
With increased risk of snow and ice at this time of year in particular, it’s best to let someone know the routes you’ll be taking and your anticipated arrival time. This way they can narrow the search area if you don’t arrive and they need to have someone looking for you. Tri-County Collision Center family wishes your family safe travels plans.
