Know Before You Go: What You Should Do Following an Accident

Accidents happen and no matter what their severity, chances are you’ll be rattled by the experience. That’s no time to be trying to figure out what you need to do.

Knowing what you should do before an accident happens will go a long way toward making your experience the best it can be.

  1. Before you ever leave home, be sure to have a notebook and pen in your glove box or download an app to your cell phone that lets you capture important details from the scene. Also, never leave home without your driver’s license and insurance.
  2. If you’ve been in an accident, it’s important to remain calm and stay at the accident scene. Make sure no one has sustained any injuries.
  3. Call 9-1-1 to get law enforcement, and EMS crews if needed, on the way. You will want to file an accident report because without one, it is simply “he said/she said” situation.
  4. Do not discuss the accident with anyone other than the law enforcement officer at the scene and your insurance company. It goes without saying that you should contact your insurance agent as soon as possible to share basic details but legal experts will tell you not to provide a written or recorded statement.
  5. Make arrangements to have your vehicle towed from the scene if you’re unable to drive it following the accident. Be sure you know what your insurance policy covers with respect to towing to avoid unexpected towing fees. Tri County Collision Center provides our customers with 24-hour towing assistance. Call us at 215.322.5350 if need a tow. Our team of service professionals is fast, friendly, clean, and reliable.

Here are some other things to think about at the site of the accident:

  • Wait in a safe location at or near the accident.
  • Take photos of the vehicle damage and accident site. They will help later after the adrenaline wears off and you have trouble recalling information. You’ll want to be able to recall what the weather was like, road conditions at the time of the accident, etc.
  • Exchange insurance details with other drivers, jotting down their license plate number, the make and model of their vehicle, etc. Do not share your social security number, however, if asked.
  • Gather the name, address and phone number for any witnesses to the accident as well.
